The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) actively participated in numerous high-level activities surrounding the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which took place from 17 to 27 September in New York, including by organizing a series of high-level events.



Attended by President of Zambia Edgar Lungu, President of Guinea Alpha Condé, and Vice-President of Côte d’Ivoire Daniel Kablan Duncan, UNIDO organized the 3rd high-level event on the Third Industrial Development Decade for Africa (IDDA III), which discussed strategies to leverage global partnerships in support of inclusive and sustainable industrial development in Africa, taking into account the challenges and opportunities afforded by the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Participants agreed that investments in physical and digital infrastructure, especially in key sectors such as health, agribusiness, education, water and sanitation, are of utmost importance to unlock Africa’s full potential.



Convened on the occasion of the Samoa Pathway Midterm Review, UNIDO, the Small Island Sustainable Energy and Climate Resilience Organization (SIDS DOCK) and the United Nations Office of the High Representative for Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) organized a high-level meeting that reviewed the progress of the Samoa Pathway Partnership under which regional Small Island Developing States (SIDS) sustainable energy centres were developed. The event also allowed for new initiatives were presented to foster economic, digital and industrial strategic development.



The UNIDO-co chaired Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit (GMIS) organized a high-level event on standards for the digitalization of inclusive and sustainable value chains, which aimed at strengthening international cooperation and partnerships in the manufactory field by bringing together policymakers to share sustainable and innovative best practices as well as to endorse global standards to achieve forward-looking value chains.



The Organization also hosted its first main event to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable by providing technical expertise and tailor-made solutions to develop urban industrial hubs that can support and thrive on green development and sustainable capacity building. UNIDO further substantively contributed to the debates of the Secretary-General’s Climate Action Summit by providing inputs on how to accelerate technology diffusion to promote a low-emission industrialization and to increase economic competiveness and green industrial development. Finally, UNIDO was also engaged in the Private Sector Forum, during which the Director General signed up for the 1.5°C campaign.



Throughout the week, UNIDO reiterated its support to developing countries to progress towards inclusive and sustainable industrial development; at the same time, the Organization strengthened its cooperation with partner organizations and other stakeholders, including Member States, the private sector and academia. This year’s UNGA included the Climate Action Summit, the High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Care, the General Debate Session, the SDG Summit, the High-Level for Dialogue on Financing Development, and the High Level Midterm Review of the Samoa Pathway.
