UNIDO and WPO improve packaging in Mongolia
Within the framework of the EU-funded “Support to Employment Creation in Mongolia (SECiM C2)” project, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in collaboration with the World Packaging Organization (WPO) organized on-site assessments to improve packaging in meat and dairy industries in Mongolia.

During the two week assessment, on-site assessments of the different meat and dairy factories were undertaken, focusing on current practices of packaging and labeling cheese, meat and dairy products. In addition, enterprise training on technical aspects of food packaging, labeling and best practices was organized, which was also attended by associations and the lead ministry.

As an immediate result, a cooperation was established between WPO and the Mongolian United Packaging Association (MUPA), with recommendations on packaging improvements provided to the aforementioned industries and to policymakers. In connection with the on-site assessments, the companies received recommendations on packaging issue solutions to improve product development and diversification.

The dairy and meat sector in Mongolia have a high potential for export and economic diversification, and packaging therefore plays an important role in the industries’ competitiveness by creating added value.
